Working remotely or finding a job in Mauritius

An increasing number of foreigners view Mauritius not only as a residential or investment destination, but also as a place from which to work. Two distinct realities coexist:  remote work for clients or employers located abroad , and  local economic activity (salaried employment or self-employment). The legal frameworks and conditions differ significantly.

Working remotely from Mauritius: The Premium Visa

The  Premium Visa is the simplest and most widely used route for digital nomads, freelancers and remote employees.

Main characteristics

  • Duration: 1 year, renewable
  • Free of charge (no processing fee indicated)
  • Minimum income generally required: approximately USD 1,500 per month for a single person (higher amounts for spouse and dependent children)
  • Obligation  not to enter the Mauritian labour market (no local employment and, in principle, no invoicing of Mauritian clients)
  • Supporting documents: proof of foreign income/activity, health insurance, proof of accommodation, bank statements

This visa allows you to live in Mauritius while maintaining your professional activity abroad. It does not grant access to the local job market and does not automatically lead to a long-term permit linked to Mauritian economic activity.

Working locally: The Occupation Permit

As soon as you wish to be employed by a Mauritian company, set up a business or carry out self-employed activity on the island, you must obtain an  Occupation Permit (OP) issued through the  Economic Development Board (EDB).

Main categories

Professional

  • Employment with a local or international company based in Mauritius
  • Minimum monthly salary raised (2026 order of magnitude: around MUR 50,000 according to recent budget announcements and harmonisation)
  • Duration linked to the employment contract, renewable

Investor

  • Creation of or participation in a company
  • Initial investment threshold raised (around USD 100,000 according to 2026 changes)
  • Progressive turnover requirements for renewal (annual thresholds to be met from year 3 / year 5)

Self-Employed

  • Activity in one’s own name or through a single-person structure
  • Proof of economic viability and business income
  • Higher turnover or income thresholds for renewals

Criteria were tightened in 2026 to require genuine economic substance. Exact amounts and renewal conditions should be verified with the EDB at the time of application, as they evolve.

Reality of the local job market

The Mauritian labour market remains relatively limited for foreign profiles. Opportunities are concentrated mainly in:

  • Financial services and global business
  • IT, digital and shared service centres
  • High-end hospitality and tourism
  • Certain specialised roles or skills in short supply locally

Companies that recruit foreigners generally need to demonstrate that the position cannot be filled locally or that the profile brings particular expertise. Salaries offered are often lower than those in Western Europe for equivalent roles, although the cost of living and the absence of certain taxes may partially offset this.

Finding a local job “from abroad” without an existing network or prior contact remains difficult. Most Professional Occupation Permits are initiated by an employer already present in Mauritius.

Points of Attention for 2026

  • The Premium Visa and the Occupation Permit follow different logics. Moving from one to the other is possible but requires a new application.
  • Thresholds (investment, salary, turnover) have been raised. Purely formal applications are increasingly scrutinised.
  • Tax residency remains independent of the permit (183-day / cumulative 270-day rules).
  • Health insurance is almost systematically required.
  • Processing times vary. Allow several weeks to a few months depending on the category.

Frequently Asked Questions about Working Remotely or Finding a Job in Mauritius

Can I work remotely from Mauritius without an Occupation Permit?

Yes, via the Premium Visa, provided income comes from abroad and no activity is carried out on the local market.

What is the difference between the Premium Visa and the Occupation Permit?

The Premium Visa authorises residence and remote work for foreign clients/employers. The Occupation Permit allows economic activity in Mauritius (employment, business, self-employment).

What is the minimum salary for a Professional Occupation Permit in 2026?

Thresholds have been raised. Refer to the amounts currently published by the EDB (order of magnitude around MUR 50,000 per month according to recent announcements).

Can a foreigner set up a company?

Yes, via the Investor Occupation Permit, subject to meeting the investment threshold and turnover conditions for renewal.

Is the job market open to foreigners?

It is selective. Opportunities exist mainly in specialised or shortage sectors and generally require a local employer to initiate the permit application.
